Delivery slots: the buyer picks a day and a time window instead of waiting for a “we'll be there sometime after lunch” call

When a courier delivers the goods, time matters as much as price. People cannot sit at home all day, and “we'll call when we set off” is not an arrangement but a promise to bother them. Slots move this conversation to the site: the buyer immediately sees the free days and windows, picks one and carries on with the order. And you stop taking more orders for one evening than the courier can deliver.

When this service isn't right

What's not included — so there are no surprises at delivery

  • route planning and courier queue optimization
  • a guarantee of arrival exactly within the chosen window
  • hiring couriers and working with contractors
  • slots with carriers that do not offer them
  • promises of cart conversion growth
Who it's for

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 4

A store with its own courier

You deliver yourselves, and the number of orders per day is physically limited. Without slots this limit is kept in a manager's head, until one day it is not.

We'll review your situation in a free audit

A free delivery review

We look at whether you need slots and with what capacity: it often turns out that a simpler calendar without limits is enough.

What we measure

  • Who delivers the goodsYour own courier, a contractor or a postal carrier. Slots mostly make sense where the route is yours and you control it.
  • How many orders a window can handleThe key figure of the whole task. Without it, slots turn into a nice calendar that overflows anyway.
  • The cutoff time for next-day deliveryThe cutoff time determines which slots can be shown at all. The most common mistake is offering a buyer tomorrow's morning slot when they order at 10 p.m.
  • How many calls go into agreeing on timesThis is what slots actually remove. If there are few calls, the task will not pay off, and we will say so directly.
  • Whether the schedule is the same across zonesCouriers often go to outlying districts only twice a week. Then the calendar has to differ by zone rather than be shared by all addresses.
  • What to do with failed attemptsThe buyer was not at home, so that slot is wasted. The rescheduling rule has to be thought through right away, not after the first cases.

What you get

  • an answer on whether you need slots and with what capacity
  • a draft grid: days, windows, cutoff time
  • an estimate of the work broken down by stage
  • an honest answer if a simple choice of date is enough

Timeline: 2–4 working days

Why is it free

Slots depend not on code but on the real capacity of your delivery. You need to know this figure before starting; otherwise you will get a calendar that lies to buyers.

What's next

You get a draft grid and an estimate. Then you decide for yourself, and the document stays with you.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • Slot capacityA calendar without limits is quick to build. Limiting orders per window already means occupancy tracking and a check at checkout.
  • Number of zones and couriersOne route is one grid. Several zones with their own delivery days mean several calendars that the buyer should not experience as a muddle.
  • Cutoff timeA simple rule like “order by 2 p.m. for next-day delivery” is cheap. More complex rules that depend on stock or the warehouse add scope.
  • RemindersAn email costs little; SMS is more expensive to maintain. This is a decision about channel and budget, not code.
  • Rescheduling by the buyerIt saves the most calls and at the same time brings the most edge cases: rescheduling into an overbooked slot, rescheduling after the order is packed, cancellation.
  • Management from the admin panelIf you change capacity and hours yourself, you need a clear screen. This adds work at the start but saves a request to us for every holiday.

Tasks and results in numbers — all metrics measured by us

an online store delivering sweets, snacks and gift sets

Task
Sell sweets, snacks and gift sets with delivery across Ukraine: a catalog with filters by type and occasion, a cart with a choice of delivery, online payment. A particular focus is the speed of the mobile version, because in this niche most orders are impulse purchases made from a phone.
Solution
A store on OpenCart 3.x (octemplates/OCT theme, HTTP/2). 5 online payment methods are connected — LiqPay, WayForPay, Privat24, Visa, Mastercard — and 4 delivery methods: Nova Poshta, Ukrposhta, pickup, courier. Free delivery to a Nova Poshta branch on orders from UAH 2,500 is implemented (a banner on the home page), along with contact via Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook.
Result
As of 31 July 2026 the store is up (HTTP 200, HTTPS): first server response 403 ms, full HTML load 532 ms; LiqPay, WayForPay and Privat24 online payment and Visa/Mastercard cards are connected, plus 4 delivery methods; the home page runs a free Nova Poshta delivery offer on orders from UAH 2,500.

Greenter

a store of automatic and drip irrigation systems with landscaping services, a catalog of 300 items

Task
Bring together in one store a technical range of irrigation systems: Hunter equipment, drip line, polyethylene pipes and fittings. The items here are small and look alike: elbows, couplings and tees differ only in diameter and thread type, so without deep category nesting and a filter a buyer will not find the part they need. The second requirement was to keep the response fast and let customers order with delivery to a branch, by courier or to a parcel locker.
Solution
A store on OpenCart 3 (chameleon theme) on nginx with HTTP/2 and brotli compression. The catalog was built out to 4 nesting levels so that fittings split by connection type and thread (elbow → female thread / male thread / connector); the categories use the OCFilter module. We added a quick view of the product card, 1-click ordering, store and product reviews, a callback request and Viber, Telegram and Messenger widgets. At checkout: Nova Poshta (branch, courier, parcel locker) and Ukrposhta (express to a branch, standard to a branch, courier), payment on delivery, bank transfer and card payment via LiqPay. Images are lazy-loaded, and the canonical on every page type points to the non-www domain.
Result
Measured on 1 August 2026: 300 products in 40 categories across 4 nesting levels. The figure is confirmed by two independent methods (walking the root categories through pagination with ?limit=100, and merging internal search results for 18 different queries); both methods returned the same set of IDs, a 0% discrepancy. First server response 235 ms (median of 5 measurements), full HTML 262 ms. The home page HTML weighs 143.6 KB, 22.5 KB with brotli. At checkout there are 6 delivery methods from 2 carriers and 3 payment methods, including LiqPay.

Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:10–30 days

  1. Capacity review

    2–4 working days

We calculate how many orders can actually be delivered per window and the time by which an order still makes it for the next day. These two figures determine everything else.

  2. Slot grid

    2–3 working days

We agree on days, windows, capacity, days off and holidays. Separately, we decide whether slots differ by zone. The decisions are yours; we lay out the consequences of each.

  3. Calendar in the cart

    4–8 working days

We implement day and window selection at checkout: booked slots are not offered, past ones are not shown. We work in a test environment.

  4. Capacity and cutoff

    3–6 working days

We add slot occupancy tracking, a check at the moment of confirmation and automatic closing after the cutoff time. This stage also covers behavior with simultaneous orders.

  5. Rescheduling and reminders

    3–6 working days

We let the buyer reschedule the date on their own and set up reminders the day before. We go through the edge cases: rescheduling into a full slot, cancellation, a holiday.

  6. Launch and reconciliation

    2–3 working days

We roll out the changes and spend the first week checking with you whether the capacity matches reality. Then the 30-day warranty from the date the acceptance act is signed applies.

Orders at night and on weekendsplaced in full
When the phone is betteroverkill at a few deliveries a day
What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. who physically delivers the goods: your own courier, a contractor or a carrier
  2. how many orders can actually be delivered in one window
  3. the time by which an order still makes it for the next day
  4. your working schedule, days off and holiday exceptions
  5. whether delivery works the same way in different districts
  6. who on your side accepts the work

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

Can slots be set up for Nova Poshta?

Not in the form they take for your own courier. Postal carriers do not let you choose an arrival window at the branch, and promising that on the site means lying to the buyer. What you can do is let the buyer choose a preferred dispatch date on your side. Slots in the full sense work where the route is yours.

Why limit the number of orders per slot?

Because without a limit the calendar only moves the problem: buyers will pick the most convenient evening, it will collect three times as many orders as the courier can deliver, and you will still have to call some of them with apologies. Capacity is the key figure of the whole task, and it is the first thing we find out.

What if the buyer was not at home?

That slot is wasted, and the rule has to be decided in advance. Usually we do it this way: the buyer reschedules the delivery to a free window themselves, and if there have been several attempts, the order goes to a manager. Repeating the trip automatically without a person's confirmation is not a good idea: the second attempt usually fails too.

What about public holidays?

The calendar has to know your days off, not the official ones: many stores work on public holidays and are closed on Mondays. So we do not hard-code the list; we give you a screen where you close days yourself. Otherwise every holiday turns into a request to us.

Can we charge extra for a narrower window?

Yes, and it is common practice: a wide window for free, a two-hour one for an extra fee. But first make sure you can really keep to a narrow window. A paid promise that is not kept does more damage than a free one.

How long does it take?

14 to 30 working days. The calendar itself is quick to build; the time goes into capacity, the cutoff time and rescheduling by the buyer, because that is where most edge cases are. If there are several zones with different delivery days, the timeline is closer to the upper limit.

Do you guarantee the courier will arrive in the chosen window?

No. We build a system that does not take more orders than you have declared and shows availability honestly. Whether the courier keeps to the schedule is your operational work, and no website can replace it. We are responsible for making sure the promise on the site matches the capacity you declared.

Will this increase conversion?

We do not quote a figure. What certainly goes away is the calls to agree on a time and the orders that hang until morning because nobody is there to confirm them. We set up analytics events on slot selection so you can see how many people use it and which windows fill up first.

There is no price list on the site on purpose: the same work differs several times over between two clients, and a “from” figure explains nothing in that case. First a free audit — we count your pages, duplicates and speed — then we name the sum and the deadline and fix both in the contract.
