Online auto parts store: selection by car and cross numbers

The development of an online auto parts store does not start with a layout, but with your data about the part: article number, applicability to the model, cross numbers of analogues, the balance of the supplier. What kind of store you can collect in general depends on what of this is in machine form - with a selection by brand and engine or with a search by article number. Next comes the routine: combine the prices of several suppliers into one nomenclature, standardize the entry of article numbers, expand the checkout to a private individual and service station. First, we look at the data, then we name the term.

Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:35–60 days

  1. Data audit and technical assignment

    4-6 working days

We analyze prices, applicability and cross-numbers, agree on the level of selection that is actually going to be collected. The output is a TK, based on which the estimate is calculated and the work is accepted.

  2. Data model

    5-8 working days

Unified nomenclature, rules for normalization of articles, priority of the supplier at the intersection, scheme of storage of applicability and analogues. The most technical stage of the project and the most expensive for processing later.

  3. Directory structure and prototype

    4-6 working days

Node tree, filter attribute set, detail card fields, search results view, cart steps. We agree to the design.

  4. Design

    5-9 working days

Main, category, details card, selection results page, shopping cart. Here we fix the target weight of the page - it affects the search more strongly than any animation in the spare parts catalog.

  5. Store assembly and checkout

    8-13 working days

Theme layout, catalog, filter, two design scenarios, admin roles, printed documents for legal entities, payment and delivery pages.

  6. Import and price comparison

    5-10 working days

Mapping of fields of each supplier, test filling, reconciliation of the number of cards by two methods, update schedule of prices and balances, verification of intersections.

  7. Testing, analytics, transmission

    4-8 working days

End-to-end tracking of the order from search by number to TTN, measurements of the first response and HTML weight, internal search events, administration process with your manager.

Technologies & integrations

What we build on and what it connects to

Stack

  • OpenCart 4.x - default: catalog, attributes, cart and checkout already in the box, so the budget goes to the data
  • OpenCart 3.x — when a critical module does not have a build for 4.x; the four rewrote the system of events
  • PHP and MySQL — search by part of the article does not use the usual index, so we keep the normalized number in a separate column and index it
  • OCFilter — filter by brand and attributes; filters produce combinations of addresses, the extra ones are closed with canonicals and robots
  • Console import in batches — pouring prices past the admin, which drops on timeout on tens of thousands of lines
  • nginx, HTTP/2, HTTPS with HSTS - channel encryption, not store protection: outdated PHP version remains at your own risk
  • Manual platform updates - open source fee: ocmod modules conflict with each other

What's included

Complete list of work and what you get as a result

  • Catalog by components and groups of parts - the buyer reaches the right shelf even when he does not know the article
  • Search by article with record normalization: "GDB1330", "gdb 1330", and "GDB-1330" will be found
  • Match by make, model, year and engine - provided your data is applicable
  • Cross numbers in the card: when the original is not available, the buyer sees what to replace it with and remains on the site
  • Consolidation of prices of several suppliers into one nomenclature with source priority - the manager does not compare files by hand
  • Checkout for two scenarios: a private individual pays by card or postpaid, the service center receives an invoice for a legal entity
  • Delivery with a choice of branch directly in the basket - the manager no longer asks for the address in correspondence
  • Technical SEO: CNC, canonical for detail accessible from multiple nodes, sitemap without duplicates
  • Analytics with internal search events — you can see what numbers people come to and what is not
  • Transfer: access, written instructions for your processes, passing the admin check with the live order manager
  • Terms of work: 50% advance payment, two rounds of edits at the design stage, warranty period of 30 calendar days
When this service isn't right

What's not included — so there are no surprises at delivery

  • Purchase of licenses for applicability catalogs and cross-number databases
  • Manual summary of applicability if data is not available in any machine form
  • Accounting for returns and warranty cases as a separate system
  • Post-launch advertising
  • Hosting, domain, acquiring
Who it's for

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 5

Orders come to the messenger, and the price lives in Excel

The buyer writes "I need pads for Lanos", the manager searches in the file, specifies the year and engine, and at the end also the branch number. The catalog with checkout takes this correspondence to itself: the person himself reaches the position, sees the availability and places the order. The manual labor removed will turn into money only when the manager's free time is redistributed elsewhere.

Free audit: we look at your spare parts data

The main question in this niche is not "what should the site look like", but "what do we know about the detail". Article number, applicability, analogues, supplier balance. The audit shows what level of matching is actually being collected from your data.

What we measure

  • Applicability sourceIs there a part-model-engine-year connection in the data. Without it, the selection for the car will not be collected, and it is more honest to say this before payment, and not after.
  • Cross numbers and analoguesIs there a table of correspondences between articles of manufacturers. It is she who saves the order when the original is not available.
  • Supplier pricesHow many of them, in what format do they come, how often are they updated, do the nomenclature overlap. Combining several prices is a separate scope of work.
  • Catalog volumeWe count on the site map and cross search. A benchmark from the adjacent B2B spare parts catalog we measured: 1,848 product cards and 138 categories, 1,992 addresses without a single duplicate.
  • Search speed by articleHow long does it take to return the result. Measured reference from the same parts catalog: first response 388.1ms with an HTML weight of 120.2KB.
  • Checkout at a service station and a private personAre both scenarios closed: the private individual pays by card or postpaid, the service needs an account and a delay.

What you get

  • Data document: what is available for selection for a car, what is missing, what will have to be bought or assembled manually.
  • Evaluation of works on price comparison of suppliers.
  • Figures for the current site, if there is one: volume of the directory, addresses, speed, weight of HTML.
  • Conversation for 30–40 minutes on the document.

Timeline: 3-5 working days - price analysis takes more time than a regular audit

Why is it free

Because in spare parts, the price of an error in the assessment is the highest: selection for a car without applicability data is not going to cost any money, and you need to know this before the start. An audit provides this knowledge to both parties.

What's next

After the audit — the amount and term by stages with dates, contract, invoice, report. If there is no data for selection, we will offer a simpler catalog with a search by article number and tell you about the limitations directly.

Short form: your contact and site URL

Did not find your case?

Describe how it works on your side — we will tell you whether “Development of an online auto parts store” fits and what it means in your situation. No brief and no call: one question, one answer.

  • Contract, act and 30-day warranty

Every project gets a written contract: scope, deadlines, amount, acceptance procedure. After delivery — act and invoice, then 30 calendar days of warranty.

  • Sole proprietor & bank transfer

The contractor is a registered sole proprietor. Payment by invoice with closing documents.

  • Rights & access — yours

Code, design and materials transfer to you after full payment. Domain, hosting, repository and analytics are registered to you.

  • Client portal instead of email chains

During the project you get access to a portal: contracts, invoices, acts and project status in one place.

  • European clients

Among our work — projects for Norway, Bulgaria, Moldova and Spain.

  • Verifiable numbers

Every case in the portfolio comes with a link to a live site and a technical measurement.

  • Audit first, then pricing

There is no price list on the site intentionally: the scope of the same work differs multiples between clients.

  • We say "no" when unsure

If the task isn't ours or the deadline is unrealistic — we tell you upfront.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • Applicability dataThere is a machine connection part-model-engine - we collect the selection for the car. There is none - there remains a search by article with cross numbers, and this is a noticeably smaller volume. We do not take the manual summary of applicability at all: on the real nomenclature, it is months, not weeks.
  • Number and format of pricesOne XML with article number, price and balance - a day for mapping. Five files in different formats, where one vendor has a number with a prefix and another without, the longest stage in the plan and a separate estimate line.
  • Cross numbersThe finished correspondence table is filled by import. Its absence does not "make it more expensive" - it changes the composition of works: analogs have to be tied by hand through manufacturers' catalogs or postponed until a source appears.
  • Catalog volumeA few thousand items is an import and a review of indexes. Tens of thousands — console flooding with batches, sitemap with submaps and special attention to the category cache.
  • Checkout scenariosRetail by card and cash on delivery is fast. Added service with invoice, VAT and deferment — this is another order logic and separate printed documents.
  • Card statusWhen the price has a brand, number, applicability and photo link, the cards are filled with imports. When the characteristics exist only in a PDF image, a person gets them — and it is this stage that most often eats up time.

Tasks and results in numbers — all metrics measured by us

B2B catalog of spare parts for industrial equipment

Task
Allow a technician to get to the right part by code or equipment model in a minimum of steps — on a product line where an error in selection costs production downtime.
Solution
Catalog on OpenCart: selection of parts by machine model, technical diagrams, availability request form. Two language versions with correct hreflang. Cash on account and payment upon receipt at the carrier's warehouse, delivery by Nova Poshta and address. Chat, Tag Manager, Maps.
Result
1,992 addresses in the site map without a single duplicate — 1,848 product cards and 138 categories. First response 388.1ms, full load 419.5ms with an HTML weight of 120.2KB: the third lightest markup among the 16 sites measured. Measured on 07/31/2026. What we found there: Universal Analytics (UA-133384797-1) still lives in the code, turned off by Google on July 1, 2023, and there is no GA4 at all - data was simply not collected for three years. There is no Sitemap directive in robots.txt, although the map itself is functional and complete.

professional tool shop, catalog of over 6,000 items

Task
Keep a large catalog with ten payment methods and four carriers — an assortment close to auto parts in terms of number of items and depth of categories.
Solution
OpenCart, sitemap through standard feed, two language versions, JSON-LD OnlineStore and ContactPoint, GA4 and Google Ads.
Result
6,857 unique addresses: 6,486 product pages and 361 categories. And here is the main lesson for the parts store: there are 25,537 entries in the site map - each product gets into it an average of 3.9 times under different category paths, and the map itself is generated in 34.2 seconds. TTFB 671.2ms with 407.8KB HTML. Another defect found: a bare domain gives a 301 to http, that is, the first login of the visitor goes without encryption.

wholesale building materials store

Task
Serve a legal entity and an individual in one checkout: account and cashless next to the usual online payment.
Solution
OpenCart, two language versions, WayForPay, non-cash account and cash, Nova Poshta and self-delivery, GTM with product list viewing events.
Result
3,145 items in the live catalog - counted by inline search pagination, 31 pages of 100 items plus 45. TTFB 547.3ms, full load 685.6ms with 212.1KB HTML. Defect found: /sitemap.xml returns HTTP 200 with a body of zero bytes, and the Sitemap directive in robots.txt remained commented out from the default OpenCart template — that is, there is actually no sitemap.
What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. Supplier prices in machine form — with article numbers, prices and balances.
  2. Applicability Data: Relate the part to the make, model, year, and engine if you have them.
  3. A table of cross numbers or access to a database of analogues.
  4. Priority rules when the same part is available from several suppliers.
  5. Terms of work with the service station: postponement, invoice, volume discount.
  6. One person with the right to approve the directory structure and selection rules.

If something is missing — let us know, we'll help you gather it or do it as a separate task.

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

Is it possible to select by VIN?

Only if there is a source that gives the applicability by VIN. The store itself does not have such data: it is a separate database, it is either licensed or obtained from the supplier. We talk about it at the audit, because a neat code does not get around the limitation. There is no database - the only working alternative is to select by brand, model and engine or search by part number.

We have five suppliers and each has its own price - is it really possible to reduce it?

It is real, and this is the main technical work of the project. Prices are mapped to one product line by article, source priority is set in case of crossing, and a rule for what to do when the balance is from two suppliers with different prices. The mechanism works on every update, so it is designed at the start, and not "twisted later". Fair margin: the exchange does not correct the account - if the balance in the price is incorrect, the site will accurately show the incorrect balance.

How will the buyer find an analogue if the original is not available?

Through the cross numbers on the card: a list of compatible articles from other manufacturers along with availability. Without this table, the store loses orders on every missing position silently - you won't even see these people in the report. The source of the cross-numbers is your provider or a separate database; if it is not there, we will tell you about it before the start.

Why does the search not find a part that is exactly in the catalog?

Almost always because of the recording format. In the price list, the number with a hyphen, the buyer enters solidly; or vice versa. Therefore, we normalize on both sides: we remove spaces and hyphens, lower the case and store the result in a separate column with its own index — the search by substring does not use the usual index, and on tens of thousands of lines it is the difference between an instant response and seconds of waiting. The description is two lines long, and the difference in the number of items found is immediately noticeable.

One part fits several nodes - will it be duplicated?

Does not have The detail lives at one address, and the nodes and categories provide paths to it — the rest is canonical. What it looks like without such discipline is clearly visible in the tool store we measured: 6,486 products and 25,537 entries in the sitemap, that is, each product is on it 3.9 times on average. Cleaning duplicates does not add new traffic, it stops scattering it — and the number of pages in the index after cleaning may even drop for a while.

How long will development take?

35-60 working days from approval of TK, which is longer than normal store. The reason is the data stage: summarization of prices, normalization of article numbers, applicability layout. If the data has already been put in order, the term runs according to the lower limit; if not, this stage will be the longest, and it stands on a separate line in the estimate.

Who will update prices and balances after launch?

Automatic import from the price according to the schedule plus your manager in the admin for manual edits. The periodicity is selected according to the speed of movement of the residues: once a day for slow nomenclature, every hour for moving goods. An important limit is that there is always a window between two shipments, in which one item can be bought twice, so it is better to leave manual confirmation of the order for scarce parts.

We need a separate cabinet for the service station - is this included?

The basic volume includes an invoice for a legal entity in checkout. The cabinet with personal prices, purchase history, balance under the contract and reordering in one click is already a neighboring service, and it is counted separately. Practical advice: start with an account and see for two or three months how many services actually process orders without a call. If they are units, the cabinet will not change anything - the problem will be in the conditions, not in the interface.

Send the supplier's price list and, if available, the applicability table.

In response, what exactly is collected from your data: selection by car or search by number with cross numbers, composition of works by stages and calendar plan. If there is no data to match, you will hear about it in the first email.

There is no price list on the site on purpose: the same work differs several times over between two clients, and a “from” figure explains nothing in that case. First a free audit — we count your pages, duplicates and speed — then we name the sum and the deadline and fix both in the contract.
