Online store of the tool: characteristics, compatibility, checkout for FOP

The development of an online tool store does not begin with the design, but with the characteristics: power, voltage, type of cartridge, size of the tool must be in separate fields of the price - otherwise, neither the filter nor the comparison of models will be assembled. The second thing that determines the amount of work is the checkout, because in this niche there is a master with a card and a company that needs a VAT invoice. In the professional tool store we measured, there were ten payment methods, and four delivery services. The rest, from the card to the feed to the platform, is calculated from these two numbers.

What's included

Complete list of work and what you get as a result

  • Catalog by type of tool, brand and series - the buyer reaches the desired group in two steps, instead of scrolling through the general list
  • A card with characteristics in separate fields: power, voltage, type of cartridge, equipment - it is from these fields that the filter is then assembled
  • Filter by features on OCFilter — hundreds of models are narrowed down to three without the involvement of a manager
  • Comparison of models in the table - closes the last step of the choice, where the person is stuck between two similar items
  • The section of consumables and accessories with compatibility binding to the tool is a reason to return to the store after purchase
  • Checkout with two branches: card, postpaid and partial payment for the master; non-cash settlement with and without VAT for the company
  • Delivery: Nova Poshta, Ukrposhta, Rozetka Delivery, self-delivery — the branch is selected from the list, the TTN is formed from the same data
  • Technical SEO: CNC, canonical for items in multiple categories, sitemap without duplicates
  • JSON-LD micro-markup: OnlineStore, Product, ContactPoint, BreadcrumbList — price, availability and contacts are clearly readable
  • XML feed to the site from the same catalog - prices and balances from one source, without a second table
  • Analytics: GTM and GA4 with view, cart and purchase events - without them there is nothing for advertising to optimize
  • Transfer: access, written instructions, passing the administration with your manager on a live order
When this service isn't right

What's not included — so there are no surprises at delivery

  • Writing technical descriptions and instructions for the tool
  • Filling in specifications by hand in excess of the agreed volume
  • Service accounting and warranty coupons as a separate system
  • Post-launch advertising
  • Hosting, domain, acquiring
Who it's for

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 4

The store works offline, and the price in PDF lives online

A buyer calls and asks if there is a specific model, the manager looks for it in the file. A catalog with characteristics removes this step: the person himself reaches the desired position and places the order. Price remains the source of the data—it simply ceases to be the only place where that data lives.

We'll review your situation in a free audit

Free audit: what already works, what will have to be done again

A tool shop looks simple until the shopper starts comparing two drills. Then it turns out that there are no characteristics in the price, the filter does not work, and the VAT company cannot process the order without a call. The audit shows how much of it will have to be closed.

What we measure

  • Characteristics in the priceHow many items have power, voltage, size, cartridge type in separate fields, not inside the description. Without this, the filter and comparison will not be assembled.
  • Volume of the directory by two methodsSite map and cross-staff search. In the professional tool store we measured, a card at a non-standard address gave 25,537 records for 6,857 unique addresses — 6,486 product cards and 361 categories.
  • Methods of calculationHow many of them your buyer really needs. In the same store, the website lists 10 payment methods and 4 delivery methods - this is the upper limit of what we measured in the niche.
  • Duplicate addressesHow many sitemap entries are there for one address. In another tool store, we measured 4,236 entries for 1,300 addresses—about 3.3 copies each.
  • Speed and weightFirst server response and HTML weight. Measured niche benchmarks: 625–671.2ms first response at 350.4–407.8KB markup.
  • Protocol and redirectsWhere does the main one lead and whether the speed is measured already after the redirection. In one of the measured stores, the measurement had to be done after switching to an unprotected version — this is a separate finding that should be closed.

What you get

  • Document with numbers: catalog volume, unique addresses and duplicates, speed, HTML weight, list of payments and deliveries.
  • An estimate of how many characteristics will have to be obtained from the descriptions by hand in order to assemble the filter.
  • List of technical findings from the current site.
  • Conversation for 30–40 minutes on the document.

Timeline: 2-4 working days

Why is it free

Because the main unknown here is the state of the characteristics in the price, not the number of pages. The same catalog can be assembled in a week or a month, depending on whether the characteristics are in the fields or in the text. It is cheaper to calculate it than to make a mistake in the estimate.

What's next

After the audit, we name the amount and term in stages with dates, then the contract, invoice and act.

Short form: your contact and site URL

  • Contract, act and 30-day warranty

Every project gets a written contract: scope, deadlines, amount, acceptance procedure. After delivery — act and invoice, then 30 calendar days of warranty.

  • Sole proprietor & bank transfer

The contractor is a registered sole proprietor. Payment by invoice with closing documents.

  • Rights & access — yours

Code, design and materials transfer to you after full payment. Domain, hosting, repository and analytics are registered to you.

  • Client portal instead of email chains

During the project you get access to a portal: contracts, invoices, acts and project status in one place.

  • European clients

Among our work — projects for Norway, Bulgaria, Moldova and Spain.

  • Verifiable numbers

Every case in the portfolio comes with a link to a live site and a technical measurement.

  • Audit first, then pricing

There is no price list on the site intentionally: the scope of the same work differs multiples between clients.

  • We say "no" when unsure

If the task isn't ours or the deadline is unrealistic — we tell you upfront.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • The state of the characteristics in the priceThe main variable of the estimate. Capacity and cartridge type in separate columns — the filter is assembled at the import stage. The same data inside the description — they are obtained by hand, and this stage grows more than the rest together.
  • How many paths lead to one productA position in three categories is three addresses and three possible duplicates. In measured niche stores, one address accounted for 3.3 and 3.9 sitemap entries; it is cheaper to canonicalize them before indexing than after.
  • Number of calculation methodsEach payment method is a contract with the provider, keys, a test transaction and a separate branch in the checkout. There are ten of them in the measured professional tool shop, four in the garden shop; this difference is clearly felt in the term.
  • Consumables and compatibilityYou either have a table of "what goes with what", or you need to collect it. The second case is not an hour of work, but a stage with a check for each series.
  • Second language versionThis is not a translation of the interface, but a second set of addresses in the sitemap. In one of the measured stores, only one language branch out of two got there - it is cheaper not to make this mistake than to rake it later.

Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:28–48 days

  1. Brief and terms of reference

    3-5 working days

We analyze the assortment, types of buyers and the list of settlements that need to be closed. The output is a TK, based on which the estimate is calculated and the work is accepted.

  2. Price analysis and characteristics map

    3-6 working days

Let's see what characteristics are already in the fields that will have to be obtained from the descriptions and by which the buyer really compares the models. It is here that the true volume of imports becomes visible.

  3. Directory prototype and structure

    3-5 working days

Tree by type, brand and series, set of card fields, checkout steps for retail and corporate. We agree with the design: redoing the structure after layout is expensive.

  4. Design

    5-9 working days

Home, category with filter, card with table of characteristics, comparison, shopping cart, checkout. Right here, we fix the target weight of the page — a benchmark for the niche 350.4–407.8 KB of HTML.

  5. Assembly of the store

    7-12 working days

Theme layout, catalog, cart and two checkout branches, admin roles, payment, shipping and returns pages, compatibility block on the snap-in card.

  6. Catalog import and filter settings

    4-7 working days

Mapping price fields to attributes, test filling, comparing the number of cards using two methods, assembling a filter from attributes and checking the comparison on real models.

  7. Integration, testing, transfer

    3-4 working days

Payments and shipping, GTM and GA4, site feed, JSON-LD, sitemap without duplicates. Next, the end-to-end running of the order from the cart to the TTN and the administration process with your manager.

Technologies & integrations

What we build on and what it connects to

Stack

  • OpenCart 4.x Default: Attributes and Buyer Groups - Boxed
  • OpenCart 3.x — when there is no module for 4.x yet; both measured tool stores are exactly at 3.x
  • OCFilter: the filter is collected only from the attributes in the fields, it will not take anything from the description text
  • Boxed product comparison — limited to the same filled attributes
  • PHP 8 and MySQL; we cannot stay on 7.3, which we saw in the niche - there is no support from December 2021
  • nginx, HTTP/2, HTTPS with HSTS — the certificate does not protect against a hacked redirect from a bare domain
  • Console price import: the admin on several thousand items falls off after a timeout

What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. Price in CSV or XML with characteristics in separate fields - they will be the filter.
  2. The list of characteristics by which the buyer really compares models: each subgroup has its own.
  3. The table of compatibility of consumables and equipment, if you have it, at least for the most popular series.
  4. The list of payment methods that must be closed and contracts with providers: the keys are given to you, not to the contractor.
  5. Photos of goods; the manufacturer's photo is usually suitable for the tool.
  6. One person with the right to approve the directory structure and card field set.

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

We have both craftsmen and VAT companies - how can we not make two sites?

One site, two checkout branches. The retail buyer sees the card, post-payment and payment in installments; the company chooses a cashless payment with or without VAT and receives an invoice without calling the manager. In the pro tool store we measured, there were ten such payment methods, including an in-store terminal and installment payments from two banks, all of which live in the same checkout. There is also a limit: an account on the website does not make you a supplier for a legal entity - the contract, deferment and availability for volume remain outside the website.

Why compare models if there is already a filter?

The filter narrows the selection, the comparison closes it. The buyer comes to two or three models and gets stuck on the difference in power or configuration — here you need a table, not another click on the filter. There is one condition: the characteristics must lie in separate fields. They lie inside the description - neither the filter nor the comparison will be collected, and this work will still have to be done, only by hand and at the import stage.

How many items will such a store pull?

The directories we measured in this niche are 1,213 and 6,486 cards, both on OpenCart, both working. The ceiling is not in the number of products: in the neighboring niche of garden equipment, we measured 55,321 product pages on the same engine, the first response of the server there is 840.5 ms. The question is how to fill and index this volume: several thousand items require console import in batches and a site map divided into submaps.

Why is my product indexed under several addresses?

Because one position lies in several categories — by type, by brand, by destination — and each path becomes a separate address. Our measurements in the niche: 4,236 sitemap entries for 1,300 unique addresses and 25,537 entries for 6,857. Treated with canonicals and a normal sitemap generator, not a ban in robots.txt. A fair limit: cleaning duplicates does not bring new traffic, it stops scattering it, and in the first weeks the number of pages in the index may even drop.

Is it possible to trade in parallel on the platform?

Yes, an XML feed from the same catalog: prices and availability are pulled from the same source, and the site is also included as a delivery method - this is how it was done in both tool shops we measured. What you should know in advance: the feed lives by the rules of the site, your categories will have to be mapped on its tree, and some attributes will have to be supplemented according to its requirements. We call the scope of this work after the audit.

How long does development take?

28–48 working days from approval of technical specifications, seven stages. The most risky is not the assembly, but bringing the characteristics to a suitable form for the filter. The price is structured - the term follows the lower limit; the characteristics have to be obtained from the texts — the import stage is stretched, and we are talking about this before the start, not in the middle of the work.

How to show that the spender will fit the buyer's tool?

Technically, this is the compatibility field on the snap card and the return block on the tool card. It is collected from your compatibility table; there is no table - it must be compiled, and it is better to compile it by series, and not by each article, otherwise the work will drag on for months. Recommendation from practice: close compatibility for the ten most popular series, fill in the rest after launch. This will not make the catalog incomplete, and the filter will work on time.

Who will fill in the specifications if they are not included in the price?

Either your content manager, or we are a separate service — there is no third option. During the audit, we calculate what proportion of the items in general have characteristics in the fields, and show the figure to the estimate. They are not reliably extracted automatically from the descriptions: two drills of the same brand are often described with different words, and the parser confuses power with voltage more often than it can be missed in the work.

Why is there no price on the page?

Because in the tool shop, the estimate is based not on the number of pages, but on two things: the depth of characteristics and the number of calculation methods. There is a difference of several weeks of business between a shop with four payments and a shop with ten, and to give a single figure for both would be misleading. Therefore, first a free audit for 2–4 working days, then the amount and term by stages, then the contract, invoice and act.

Send the price - we'll show you what will be collected from it in the filter

In 2-4 working days, we will return with a document: how many items have characteristics in the fields, how many addresses in the site map and how many of them are duplicates, how the catalog is given and what will have to be added by hand.

  • We work under a contract

There is no price list on the site on purpose: the same work differs several times over between two clients, and a “from” figure explains nothing in that case. First a free audit — we count your pages, duplicates and speed — then we name the sum and the deadline and fix both in the contract.
