Online optical store: glasses chosen by prescription, not from a photo

An online optical store deals with two different kinds of products at once. Sunglasses and frames are bought by eye: photos, shape and measurements in millimeters decide the purchase. Prescription lenses are bought by the numbers, and an order without those numbers is meaningless. A store that mixes both scenarios into one form forces a manager to call back every time. We separate these paths: what sells as is sells without a call, and what needs fitting collects the required parameters right away.

Who it's for

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 4

An optician's store going online

You have a location, a specialist and a range of frames. The question is not how to show the products but how to take orders for items that need fitting without turning the site into a callback form.

We'll review your situation in a free audit
What's included

Complete list of work and what you get as a result

  • a frame catalog with filters by shape, material, color and size
  • a product page with frame measurements in millimeters: lens width, bridge width, temple length
  • a separate order path for products that require a prescription, with fields for its parameters
  • a split of the range into products sold as is and products made to order
  • stock tracking for each model and color separately
  • repeating a previous lens order, so the numbers do not have to be re-entered every time
  • checkout with Ukrainian delivery and payment methods
  • technical groundwork for search: structured data, breadcrumbs, canonical URLs, sitemap
  • handover with a catalog description and instructions for your content manager
When this service isn't right

What's not included — so there are no surprises at delivery

  • medical consultations and diopter selection: that is your specialist's job, not the website's
  • photographing frames and writing descriptions
  • lens manufacturing and laboratory work
  • promises of search rankings or a specific sales volume
  • verifying the prescriptions customers provide

Free review of your task

We look at what makes optics a niche of its own: how much of the range sells without fitting, how much needs parameters, and what happens with those orders today.

What we measure

  • What share of products requires a prescriptionThis determines whether a separate order path is needed or a regular cart with an extra field is enough.
  • How lens orders are taken todayPhone, messenger, form: we look at how much manual work can be removed and where exactly inquiries get lost.
  • Whether frame measurements exist in structured formIf lens width and bridge width exist only as text in the description, filtering by them is impossible until the data is moved into fields.
  • How many marking systems your brands useThis determines whether they need to be mapped to each other so that the customer can compare models from different manufacturers.
  • Technical state of your current siteResponse speed, structured data, canonical URLs, breadcrumb markup: the same things we measured in stores of this niche.
  • Where orders should goEmail, a CRM or an accounting system: this determines how much manual work remains after launch.

What you get

  • a list of what affects results in this niche, with the reasons explained
  • a proposed catalog structure for frames and lenses
  • an estimate of the work broken down by stage
  • an honest answer on whether you need this work at all

Timeline: 2–4 working days

Why is it free

A store selling only sunglasses and a store that accepts prescriptions differ in scope several times over. Without a review, any figure would be guesswork.

What's next

You get the list and the estimate. The decision is yours, and the document stays with you either way.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • Whether you sell prescription productsA separate order path with prescription parameters, a completeness check and passing the order on is the largest single part of the work in this niche.
  • State of your frame dataIf the measurements in millimeters are already fields, the filter is quick to build. If they are buried in text descriptions, the data has to be restructured first, and that is a separate stage.
  • Number of brands and marking systemsOne brand means one logic. A dozen brands with their own notations means mapping them to each other before model comparison becomes possible at all.
  • Repeat lens ordersSaving the parameters of a previous order and repeating it in one step is noticeably more convenient for the customer and noticeably more work than a regular cart.
  • Where the stock data comes fromManual updates in the admin panel are the cheapest at the start. An exchange with your accounting system costs more, but removes daily work and availability errors.
  • Whether there is anything to migrateA new store is simpler than moving from an existing site: a migration adds URL preservation, redirects and a data reconciliation after the transfer.
Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:20–60 days

  1. Reviewing the task

    2–4 working days

We split the range into products that sell as is and products that need fitting. We look at the state of your frame data and at how lens orders are taken today.

  2. Catalog and product page structure

    3–7 working days

We design categories, filters and the product page so that frame measurements are fields, not text. We decide how to show availability by color.

  3. Building the store

    10–30 working days

We build the catalog, filters by shape and size, and a product page with measurements. We work in a test environment and leave your existing site untouched.

  4. Prescription order path

    5–15 working days

We build a separate scenario for products that need parameters: collecting the data, checking it for completeness, and passing it to a manager or to your accounting system. Repeating a previous order is added here as well.

  5. Technical groundwork for search

    3–7 working days

Structured data, breadcrumbs, canonical URLs, the sitemap and response speed. These are exactly what the measured stores in this niche lacked most often.

  6. Launch and handover

    2–5 working days

We roll out the store, watch the first orders and hand over the catalog description. After that, the 30-day warranty applies from the date the acceptance act is signed.

Tasks and results in numbers — all metrics measured by us

a sample of 7 Ukrainian online stores in the “optics” niche

Task
Find out the actual state of websites in the optics niche, rather than what their owners say: their technical groundwork, measurement setup and site size.
Solution
An external measurement without access to anyone's admin panel: first response time as the median of several measurements, the catalog taken from the sitemap with duplicate URLs removed, counters in the home page HTML, the PHP version from the headers, hreflang, TLS, robots.txt and the canonical URL.
Result
Measured on 17 September 2026: 7 Ukrainian online stores in the “optics” niche were checked. 7 of 7 have no breadcrumb markup; 5 of 7 have no canonical URL on the homepage; 4 of 7 have no local business markup; 3 of 7 have no structured data. Median first response time: 457.3 ms; median sitemap size: 4,294 URLs.

LadyLand

an online store of professional cosmetics and care products, a catalog of more than 5,000 SKUs

Task
Bring a large range of professional cosmetics into one catalog, with navigation by brand and product type, product pages with detailed ingredients and intended use, and payment and delivery terms that are clear to a retail customer.
Solution
A store on OpenCart 3 (lightshop theme, nginx). Catalog organized by brand and product type. Free delivery on orders from 4,000 UAH; payment by full prepayment to the sole proprietor's account or cash on delivery with a 200 UAH deposit. Organization and PostalAddress microdata. Social channels: Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok.
Result
5,561 products in the live catalog (measured on 31 July 2026 with an empty OpenCart search query: 56 pages of 100 items, the last one holding 61). Home page HTML 154 KB, TTFB 0.80 s. The home page carries Organization + PostalAddress microdata.
What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. a list of models with frame measurements in millimeters, if you have this data
  2. how orders for prescription products are placed today
  3. product photos and descriptions, or access to the source they come from
  4. your store's delivery, exchange and return terms
  5. where an order should go after checkout
  6. who on your side accepts the work and can answer questions on substance

If something is missing — let us know, we'll help you gather it or do it as a separate task.

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

Can prescription lenses be sold through a regular cart?

Technically yes, but then a manager calls the customer back anyway, because some of the required figures were never collected. The better approach is a separate path for these products: the customer enters the parameters right away, the form checks that they are complete, and the order arrives ready to process. The site takes no medical responsibility for the values themselves; that stays with your specialist.

Why list frame measurements in millimeters if there are photos?

A photo shows how a frame looks, not whether it will fit. Lens width, bridge width and temple length are what a customer who already wears glasses relies on to choose a model with confidence. When these values are fields, filtering and comparison work on them; when they sit only as text in the description, neither is possible.

How long does development take?

23 to 64 working days. The range depends mainly on whether a separate prescription order path is needed and on the state of your frame data. We give an exact timeline after the review, once the scope is clear.

Our frame data exists only in the descriptions. Is that a problem?

It is not an obstacle, but it is a separate stage of work: the measurements have to be moved from the text into fields. The effort depends on the number of models. We show this figure separately during the review so it does not come as a surprise halfway through the project.

Do you guarantee search rankings?

No. Nobody who understands how search works guarantees rankings. We are responsible for the technical groundwork: speed, structured data, canonical URLs, breadcrumbs and the sitemap. In the stores of this niche that we measured, these were exactly the things most often missing altogether.

Can we start with a simpler version?

Yes, and it is often a sensible choice. First a catalog of frames and sunglasses with a regular cart, then a separate path for prescription products. The store is up and running after the first stage, and the second is added without redoing what has already been built.

What happens after launch if something goes wrong?

A 30-calendar-day warranty applies from the date the acceptance act is signed: errors that are our fault are fixed free of charge. This is a clause in the contract, not a verbal promise. The domain, hosting and analytics are registered in your name.

Who owns the result?

Yours. Property rights to the code, design and materials pass to the client after full payment, and the result is handed over under an acceptance act. Along with the access credentials, we hand over a description of how the catalog is structured.

  • Product cardsPhoto, price and a button — no extra page to open.

  • We work under a contract

There is no price list on the site on purpose: the same work differs several times over between two clients, and a “from” figure explains nothing in that case. First a free audit — we count your pages, duplicates and speed — then we name the sum and the deadline and fix both in the contract.
