Product card quality scoring: which catalog items are not ready to sell

A catalog of several thousand items always has cards that do not sell: no second photo, no attributes, a description copied from the supplier. The problem is not that they exist; it is that nobody knows how many there are or which ones. Scoring answers this with a figure: each card gets a score based on your rules, and you see a list of the worst items with a note on exactly what is missing. From there, the work can be planned rather than done at random.

What's included

Complete list of work and what you get as a result

  • card scoring rules agreed with you, not taken from someone else's checklist
  • a score for every catalog item against these rules, not for a sample
  • a list of the worst cards with a note on exactly what each one lacks
  • a report broken down by category: where the problem is systemic and where it is isolated
  • a split between what gets fixed automatically and what needs a person
  • product markup so search engines see price, availability and attributes
  • filling in what can be recovered from existing data
  • the ability to rerun the scoring without our involvement
  • short instructions on how to read the report and plan work from it
When this service isn't right

What's not included — so there are no surprises at delivery

  • writing descriptions and photographing products
  • buying missing data from suppliers
  • promises of search rankings based on the scoring results
  • maintaining the catalog after implementation, which is your team's job
  • verifying the accuracy of attributes provided by the manufacturer
Who it's for

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 4

A catalog too large to review by hand

From several thousand items up, spot checks stop meaning anything: bad cards are distributed unevenly, and the largest categories have the most of them.

We'll review your situation in a free audit

A free check of a sample of your cards

We take part of the catalog and score it against draft rules. This shows whether there is a problem at all and how big it is.

What we measure

  • How many cards lack a second photoOne image per item is the typical state of catalogs filled from price lists, and one of the most noticeable reasons buyers distrust a store.
  • How many items have no attributesWithout them neither the filter nor comparison works, and the buyer cannot narrow the choice within a category.
  • How many descriptions are copiedWe check for matching descriptions between items within your own catalog: that is what creates identical pages that compete with each other.
  • Whether products are marked upWe check whether search engines see price, availability and attributes as data rather than as text on the page.
  • How problems are distributed across categoriesOften eighty percent of the bad cards sit in three categories, and this changes the order of work.
  • What can be recovered automaticallySome empty fields can be filled from existing data. This share determines how much work is left for people.

What you get

  • a figure: what share of the sample does not meet the basic requirements
  • examples of the worst cards with explanations
  • draft scoring rules for discussion
  • an estimate of the work broken down by stage

Timeline: 2–4 working days

Why is it free

Until you look at the real cards, any estimate of the scope would be guesswork: catalogs built from price lists and catalogs filled by hand fail in different places.

What's next

You get a figure and examples. Then you decide for yourself: do it with us, do it in-house or put it off.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • Catalog sizeScoring a thousand items and scoring a hundred thousand differ not so much in calculation time as in the number of exceptions the rules have to account for.
  • Number of rulesChecking for photos is simple. Checking whether a description was copied from the supplier and whether the attributes match the category is noticeably harder.
  • Variety of categoriesFor shoes, tools and cosmetics, a “complete card” means different sets of fields. The more distinct categories, the more separate rules.
  • Whether automatic filling is neededJust showing the problems costs less. Recovering part of the data from existing sources is separate work, but it is what removes the most manual labor.
  • State of the markupIf there is no product markup at all, adding it is a separate stage; if it exists but is incomplete, there is less work.
  • Repeat runsA one-off scoring is simpler. Setting it up so you can run it yourselves every month is a bit more work, but then scoring becomes a tool rather than a report.

Tasks and results in numbers — all metrics measured by us

a sample of 41 Ukrainian online stores, of which 39 responded and a product page was checked on 30

Task
Find out whether Ukrainian stores are ready to hand product data to machines: whether the product, price and attributes are marked up so that search engines and marketplaces can read them.
Solution
An external measurement of the home page and one product page from the sitemap: traces of features in the HTML, product, price and attribute markup. It records the presence of a trace, not the quality of the implementation.
Result
Measured on 17 September 2026, 35 stores: Product markup: 10 sites out of 25; Offer price markup: 10 sites out of 25; product attributes marked up: 5 sites out of 25.

Check how complete the stores' product cards are: whether there are attribute filters, comparison and displayed ratings, all of which grow out of the quality of the product data itself.

Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:5–20 days

  1. Sample check

    2–4 working days

We take part of the catalog and score it against draft rules. We show the figure and examples: whether there is a problem and how big it is.

  2. Agreeing on the rules

    1–3 working days

Together we define what a ready card means for you: how many photos, which attributes are mandatory for each group of categories, what the minimum description length should be.

  3. Scoring the whole catalog

    2–6 working days

We run the rules over every item. We build a report broken down by category and a list of the worst cards with a note on what is missing.

  4. Auto-fill

    2–8 working days

We recover what can be recovered from existing data: attributes from descriptions, category fields, units of measurement. The rest stays with people, and we tell you honestly how much of it there is.

  5. Product markup

    1–4 working days

We add markup so search engines see price, availability and attributes as data. We check that it reads without errors.

  6. Handing over the tool

    1–3 working days

We make sure the scoring can be rerun without us and show you how to read the report. Then the 30-day warranty from the date the acceptance act is signed applies.

What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. access to the catalog or an export of it in a convenient format
  2. what a “ready card” means to you, at least in general terms
  3. who is responsible for the content of which categories
  4. which data is deliberately missing and will stay that way
  5. whether you need to rerun the scoring on your own
  6. who on your side accepts the work

If something is missing — let us know, we'll help you gather it or do it as a separate task.

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

How is this different from a regular site audit?

An audit looks at the site as a whole: speed, structure, technical errors. Scoring looks at each catalog item separately and gives a figure for each one. The results differ in kind: after an audit you know what to fix on the site; after scoring, which products to bring up to standard and in what order.

Who decides what counts as a good card?

You do. We bring draft rules based on experience and show how they work on your sample, but the final set of requirements is agreed with you. Someone else's checklist applied without discussion produces a nice-looking report that is awkward to work from.

How many cards usually turn out to be incomplete?

We do not quote an average figure in advance. It is worthless, because it depends on where the catalog content came from. In stores filled from supplier price lists, the share of incomplete cards is higher; where the content is made in-house, it is lower. That is exactly why the sample check is free: you see your own figure, not someone else's.

Will you fill in the empty fields?

Some of them, yes: the part that can be recovered from existing data, such as attributes hidden in descriptions, units of measurement and category fields. But we do not take photos or write descriptions, and after scoring we tell you honestly how much work is left for people. Promising otherwise would mean selling you a report instead of a result.

Will this affect search?

Complete attributes and correct markup help search engines understand the page and help buyers find the product with a filter. But this is a technical foundation, not a guarantee of rankings: those are affected by competition, prices and demand. We are responsible for the data being in place and marked up correctly.

How long does it take?

9 to 28 working days. The calculation itself is fast; the time goes into agreeing on the rules and handling exceptions, and a varied catalog always has more of those than it seems at the start.

Can we run the scoring ourselves every month?

Yes, and that is where most of the value lies. A one-off report goes stale in a few weeks, while a regular run shows movement: whether the catalog is getting better and which categories are standing still. We hand over the tool and show you how to use it.

Who owns the result?

You do. The rules, reports and code pass to the client after full payment, and the result is handed over under an acceptance act. You can develop the rules further yourself or with another contractor.

There is no price list on the site on purpose: the same work differs several times over between two clients, and a “from” figure explains nothing in that case. First a free audit — we count your pages, duplicates and speed — then we name the sum and the deadline and fix both in the contract.
