Stable on Laravel 13 and PHP 8.5: What Changed in Our Store Engine

Stable, our own online store engine, runs on Laravel 13 in the main branch and requires PHP 8.5. Here is what changed, what is still in progress, and what we do not claim yet.

Stable is our own modular online store engine. One codebase serves different shops: you switch on the modules you need (shipping, payments, loyalty, multiple warehouses, wholesale prices, SEO), pick a theme and apply a preset, a ready-made business profile. No code changes per shop. Below is what versions it now runs on and why we wanted this.

What is in the Stable code now

The main branch of the repository has:

  • PHP 8.5 as the minimum version (we work locally on 8.5.12);
  • Laravel 13;
  • Filament 5.11 and Livewire 4.4 for the admin panel.

The move went in separate steps instead of one big merge: first Laravel 13 together with raising the minimum PHP version, then Filament and Livewire, then the landing page.

What is still in progress

We are gradually removing the dependency on Filament: the admin panel is moving to our own layer, and new admin pages are already built there. This is a long project and it is not finished: Filament is still part of Stable for now.

What we do not claim yet

We keep "it is in the code" separate from "it runs in production". For this article we did not separately check the PHP version in the container on a specific server, so we do not say that every shop is already on PHP 8.5. There are also no speed or order figures here: we do not publish results we have not measured. When measurements and client permission exist, this article will be extended.

What it means for a store owner

  1. PHP version matters for security. After PHP2Shell it became clear that "PHP has been updated" must be verified. We described how to do it in 15 minutes in a separate article.
  2. A framework upgrade is not a one-off event. Laravel and PHP are released regularly, and a shop that does not update becomes expensive to maintain.
  3. If you are choosing between custom development and a ready-made engine, see the page online store on Laravel 13, which compares the two paths. For updates and server protection, read the PHP update page.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions on the topic

Which Laravel and PHP versions does Stable run on?

The main branch of the repository uses Laravel 13 and PHP 8.5 as the minimum version. We check the PHP version on each client server separately.

Are all Stable shops already running PHP 8.5?

We do not claim that. We know the code requires at least PHP 8.5, but the version in the container on each individual server is checked separately.

Why are you moving the admin panel from Filament to your own layer?

We are gradually removing the dependency on Filament. The move is still under way, Filament remains in the project for now, and new admin pages are already built on our own layer.

Can I order a store like this?

Yes. The page about an online store on Laravel 13 describes two paths: custom development and the ready-made Stable engine. A free requirements review is available through the form on that page.
