Guest checkout: the password a shopper has to invent before paying costs you the order

Registration before purchase seems like a trifle: two fields and an email confirmation. But it sits in the worst possible place, between the decision to buy and the payment. The person has already chosen a product and taken out their card, and then they are asked to invent a password. Some leave, and the store never finds out how many. We remove this obstacle in a way that keeps order history and repeat sales intact.

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 4

A store where registration is mandatory

The most direct case: a shopper physically cannot place an order without an account. This is the obstacle to remove first, because it costs the most.

We'll review your situation in a free audit
A free review of your checkout

We go through checkout as a new shopper and look at exactly where registration is required and what it really costs you.

What we measure

  • Whether it is possible to buy without an account at allSometimes the option exists but is hidden: the “continue as guest” button sits below the login form and gets lost.
  • What is asked for at registrationEmail confirmation before payment is a particularly harmful step: the shopper leaves the store for their inbox and may not come back.
  • How many fields are duplicatedData is often entered twice: at registration and then again in the order. This is visible at once and easy to remove.
  • Why you need registrationSometimes it is for a bonus program or wholesale prices, in which case only some shoppers need it, not everyone. That changes the solution.
  • What the manager sees in a guest orderIf the system ties orders only to an account, guest orders can get lost in the workflow. This has to be checked before the changes.
  • Whether drop-offs are visible in analyticsWithout events on the checkout steps, the share of losses at registration remains a guess.

What you get

  • the place where registration is required, and what happens if it is removed
  • a list of duplicated fields
  • an estimate of the work
  • an honest answer if registration is justified in your case

Timeline: 1–3 working days

Why is it free

The work is small, and the solution is often obvious after the first walkthrough. There is nothing here worth charging for.

What's next

You receive an answer and an estimate. What to do next is your decision; the list stays with you.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • How deeply registration is embeddedIf it is a platform setting, it is a day's work. If the account area was custom-built on top and prices or bonuses are tied to it, untangling it will take longer.
  • Whether order linking is neededSimply allowing guest purchases is quick. Making a later registration pull in previous orders by phone number is separate logic.
  • Status access without logging inA link from the email or a check by order number is a small but necessary part; otherwise a guest has no way of finding out what is happening with their order.
  • Bonuses and wholesale pricesIf some prices depend on having an account, you need to decide what a guest sees. This is a commercial decision, not a technical one, and it is yours to make.
  • The manager's workGuest orders have to be visible in the same place as all the others. If the system separates them, extra development is needed.
  • AnalyticsEvents on the steps show the share of guest orders and whether behavior has changed. Without them, the result can only be taken on faith.

Tasks and results in numbers — all metrics measured by us

a sample of 41 Ukrainian online stores, of which 39 responded and a product page was checked on 30

Task
Check how common the ways of shortening the path to an order are among stores: one-click purchase, a free-delivery threshold, payment in installments.
Solution
An external measurement of the home page and one product page from the sitemap: traces of features in the HTML, product markup, prices and attributes. It records the presence of a trace, not the quality of implementation.
Result
Measured on 17 September 2026, 35 stores: one-click purchase is visible on 10 sites out of 25; a free delivery threshold based on order value: 3 sites out of 25; payment in installments: 7 sites out of 25.

Kvant Energy

an online retail store of heating equipment, a catalog of ~3,500 SKUs

Task
Bring the full range of heating equipment online (bimetallic radiators, electric radiators, breezers, fan heaters, underfloor heating, thermostats) with navigation and filters for comparing technical specifications, and with a checkout that serves both retail shoppers and sole proprietors or VAT-registered LLCs.
Solution
A store on OpenCart 3 (oct_showcase theme, nginx). Two language versions, uk/ru, with correct hreflang and x-default. Checkout with monobank, cash on delivery, cash on collection and a bank-transfer invoice for sole proprietors and VAT-registered LLCs. Four delivery methods: Nova Poshta, Meest Express, Delivery, pickup in Kharkiv. GTM/GA4, Google Maps and the Telegram/Viber/WhatsApp messengers are connected.
Result
3,565 product cards in the live catalog (measured on 31 July 2026 via standard OpenCart search with an empty query: 36 pages of 100 items, the last one with 65). TTFB 0.52 s, full HTML load 0.66 s at 296 KB of markup. 4 payment methods and 4 delivery methods at checkout. Two language versions with valid hreflang and x-default.

Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:4–15 days

  1. Checkout review

    1–3 working days

We walk the new shopper's path, find where registration is required, and find out why it was needed.

  2. Deciding on the account

    1 working day

Together we determine who needs an account: wholesale clients, bonus program members, or nobody. The scope depends on this.

  3. Guest checkout

    2–6 working days

We make purchasing possible without an account, remove duplicated fields, and move the offer to register to the screen after payment.

  4. Status and linking

    1–5 working days

We add access to order status without logging in, and pull in previous orders by phone number if the shopper registers later.

  5. Testing the paths

    1–3 working days

We go through every variant: a new guest, a registered shopper, a guest with an existing account on the same email. We test on a phone.

  6. Rollout and monitoring

    1 working day

We roll out the changes and watch the share of guest orders in the first days. After that, the 30-day warranty applies from the date the acceptance act is signed.

What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. access to the store and to a test environment, if there is one
  2. whether your regular or wholesale shoppers need an account
  3. whether prices or bonuses depend on having an account
  4. what the manager needs to see in a guest order
  5. where the order is passed after checkout
  6. who on your side accepts the work

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

Won't we lose our customer base?

No. You get the shopper's contact details from the order itself: name, phone, email are all needed for delivery and get entered anyway. The only difference is whether you force the person to invent a password. The logic of “no registration, no repeat sales” works the other way around: without an order there is neither a customer base nor a sale.

How does a guest find out what is happening with their order?

Via the link in the confirmation email, or by order number and phone. This is a mandatory part of the work: if a guest has no way to check the status, they call a manager, and you simply shift the load from the form to a person.

What if a shopper wants an account later?

Then, when they register with the same phone number, their previous orders are pulled into their history. This is separate work, but it is what makes the transition seamless: a person loses nothing by deciding to register six months later.

We have wholesale prices in the customer account. Isn't registration necessary?

Wholesale buyers need it, retail shoppers do not. It is not either/or: guest checkout for retail and an account for wholesale clients coexist perfectly well. During the review we look at what share of your shoppers actually need an account.

How many extra orders will we get?

We will not name a figure: it depends on how many people drop off at this particular step now, and without analytics events that is unknown. That is why we set up the events as part of the same work: you will see the share of guest orders and can assess the change yourself instead of taking our word for it.

Won't there be more erroneous orders?

Practice shows the opposite: data errors happen more often when a person is rushing through unnecessary steps. But phone and address validation stays mandatory: guest checkout does not mean no checks, it means no password.

How long does it take?

6 to 16 working days. If registration is just a platform setting, it is a few days of work. If the account area was custom-built on top and prices or bonuses are tied to it, it will take longer, and this becomes clear during the review.

Will we have to remove the customer account?

No, and we do not recommend it. Those who use it find it convenient: saved addresses, history, repeat orders. The point is only not to make it mandatory for everyone.

  • We work under a contract

There is no price list on the site on purpose: the same work differs several times over between two clients, and a “from” figure explains nothing in that case. First a free audit — we count your pages, duplicates and speed — then we name the sum and the deadline and fix both in the contract.
