Google remarketing: returning those who have already visited the site

Setting up Google Ads remarketing starts not with a campaign, but with data: first events on the site, then lists compiled from those events, and only then impressions. The order is exactly this, because an empty or too rough list will not run the ad. We classify visitors by the depth of interaction — viewed, put in cart, started checkout, bought — and remove buyers from those lists where there is nothing to show them. Then there are the retention periods for your decision cycle and the frequency limit so that the return does not turn into a chase.

Free data verification for remarketing

Remarketing lives on audiences, and audiences gather from events. If there are no events, the lists will be empty or too coarse - "everyone who has been to the site" - and ads will catch up with random people. The test shows what segments can actually be collected from now.

What we measure

  • What events are coming up nowViewing the product, adding it to the cart, starting the checkout, purchasing. Segments cannot be built without them.
  • Are product identifiers transmittedDynamics requires an ID that matches the feed. In one of the measured stores, the remarketing module gave the product_id for several systems at once - in this way, dynamic ads are really possible.
  • The size of the audienceLists have a minimum size threshold. We count whether your traffic reaches this threshold or the campaign just won't start showing.
  • Connection of analytics with advertising accountWithout it, segments from GA4 in Ads cannot be obtained, and everything will have to be built anew with a tag.
  • Data collection consent statusIf there is a consent banner on the site, part of the audience will not be included in the lists. This is normal, but you need to know this in advance.
  • What is now shown to returning usersIt often turns out that a person who has already bought is overtaken by advertising of the same product for months. This is immediately visible.

What you get

  • A list of segments that can be collected right now and those for which events are missing.
  • Estimating each segment's size and suitability for launch.
  • Scheme of exclusions: who not to show, so as not to pay twice.
  • Conversation for 30 minutes on the document.

Timeline: 2-4 working days

Why is it free

Because in half of the cases, the answer sounds like "first put the measurement", and it is strange to take money for it.

What's next

We provide an estimate separately for setting up events and separately for building audiences and conducting campaigns.

Short form: your contact and site URL

  • Contract, act and 30-day warranty

Every project gets a written contract: scope, deadlines, amount, acceptance procedure. After delivery — act and invoice, then 30 calendar days of warranty.

  • Sole proprietor & bank transfer

The contractor is a registered sole proprietor. Payment by invoice with closing documents.

  • Rights & access — yours

Code, design and materials transfer to you after full payment. Domain, hosting, repository and analytics are registered to you.

  • Client portal instead of email chains

During the project you get access to a portal: contracts, invoices, acts and project status in one place.

  • European clients

Among our work — projects for Norway, Bulgaria, Moldova and Spain.

  • Verifiable numbers

Every case in the portfolio comes with a link to a live site and a technical measurement.

  • Audit first, then pricing

There is no price list on the site intentionally: the scope of the same work differs multiples between clients.

  • We say "no" when unsure

If the task isn't ours or the deadline is unrealistic — we tell you upfront.

What affects the price

Why two seemingly identical tasks are priced differently

  • Measurement statusThe store, where events are already taking place in GA4 and Google Ads, only needs days in the office. A site without any event is first measured — it is a separate volume with a different term.
  • Number of segmentsFour steps of the funnel and one solution cycle - one job. Several categories with different cycles, two languages and separate lists for each - another.
  • Dynamic remarketingAdds feed, Merchant Center and ID reconciliation. If the id on the site does not match the id in the feed, this is what is fixed first.
  • CreativesReady-made banners for network formats do not add anything. A set from scratch for all sizes is counted in a separate line.
  • Customer listsUploading your database requires a consent and format check. Without this, we will not hire her.
  • Consent modeThe consent banner adds a stage: the signals and simulations must be adjusted, otherwise the lists will sag and the cause will not be obvious.
Who it's for

Situations where this service delivers results

Scenario 1 of 4

The store already transmits product views, but there are no lists of them

The tag is there, the events are going on, and in the office there is one audience "all visitors in 30 days". In the wholesale building materials store we measured on July 31, 2026, the view_item_list event is sent to Google Ads along with the vertical — the "viewed a specific item" list is built without any edits on the site. Such projects are the shortest: all the work is done in the office.

What's included

Complete list of work and what you get as a result

  • Audit of events on the site: we show what segments are being built from today, and what data is missing
  • Segments by depth of interaction — looked, put in the cart, started checkout, bought: each next step is more expensive and the bet on it is different
  • Excluding buyers from the lists for the same product — the budget does not go to those who have already paid
  • Different retention periods for different purchase cycles: consumables and furniture no longer live in the same window
  • Dynamic remarketing with replacement of viewed items from the feed plus reconciliation of site and feed IDs
  • Limiting the frequency of impressions per day and week — the limit is set at the start, not after complaints
  • Creatives for the main media network formats, different for those who were there yesterday and those who were there three weeks ago
  • A separate return to abandoned cart campaign with its own budget and its own line in the report
  • Lists based on your customer data, if you are willing to share it - with consent and without offloading
  • Monthly report with a breakdown by segment: you can see which list brings returns and which only spends
When this service isn't right

What's not included — so there are no surprises at delivery

  • Advertising budget - impressions are paid for from your Google account
  • Promises of a specific percentage of returns
  • Mail and messengers are another channel
  • A complete banner set for all formats without a separate estimate
  • Bypassing restrictions imposed by the user's opt-out of data collection
Process steps

Transparent stages with approval at every step

Total duration:5–15 days

  1. Audit of events, tags and accounts

    1-3 working days

Let's see what's being transferred now: remarketing tag, GA4 events, analytics link to ad account, consent status. The output is a list of segments that can be collected today and those for which data is missing.

  2. Audiences and retention periods

    1-3 working days

We build lists as a difference of funnel steps, not as separate sets. For each segment, we set its own window for your decision cycle and immediately calculate whether it reaches the minimum size.

  3. Dynamics: feed and match IDs

    1-3 working days

We compare the product ID on the site with the ID in the Merchant Center feed. The discrepancy here is the most common reason for empty dynamic ads, and it is fixed on the site, not in the office.

  4. Campaigns, exclusions, frequency

    1-3 working days

We divide segments by campaigns, subtract buyers, set a limit of impressions per day and week, separate returns to the cart with a separate budget.

  5. Creatives, launch and correction according to the first data

    1-3 working days

Texts and banners for network formats, different for fresh and old visit. After the launch, we look at the frequency and size of the lists for a week and push the boundaries based on data, not on feel.

Cases

Tasks and results in numbers — all metrics measured by us

wholesale store of building materials (B2B)

Task
Check whether it is possible to build remarketing on this store based on product views without updating the site.
Solution
External technical measurement on July 31, 2026: what is transferred to the analytics and advertising account, what is the real volume of the directory, how HTML is given, what with the sitemap.
Result
A catalog of 3,145 products, calculated page by page using standard search (31×100 plus 45), and items were counted by unique ids in the payload of the view_item_list event. That is, the product viewing event already goes to Google Ads together with the retail vertical, and the "viewed product" list is collected without editing on the site. First server response 547.3 ms, full HTML download 685.6 ms at 212.1 KB. Defect found: /sitemap.xml returns 200 with a body of zero bytes, the Sitemap directive in robots.txt remained commented out from the default template.

online retail underwear store, catalog of over 110,000 items

Task
Assess readiness for dynamic remarketing: Does the page have a product ID that can be mapped to the feed.
Solution
Analyzed HTML, compared two independent catalog counting methods and checked a sample of 150 random product addresses of the site map.
Result
The remarketing module gives the product_id immediately to Google and Facebook, ecommerce_ga4 is enabled - dynamic ads are technically possible here. The catalog of 115,456 items according to standard search against 112,646 unique addresses according to the site map, a discrepancy of 2.4%. The found defect strikes precisely in terms of dynamics: out of 150 verified product addresses, 50 (33%) return 301, and all 50 lead to a different position — a different size or color. The ad will show one model and return the person to the next one.

a niche store of dental materials with a content part

Task
Calculate what to collect audiences for returning visitors to the directory.
Solution
We checked the HTML of the main page for counters and events, checked the site map with the actual volume of the catalog.
Result
There was nothing to collect from: zero mentions of googletagmanager, gtag, google-analytics and fbq — no analytics at all. At the same time, the site itself is healthy: 96 products and 21 categories give exactly 123 addresses in the site map without a single duplicate, the first response is 440.7 ms with 103.2 KB of HTML. Remarketing here won't start before the events occur, and that's the answer you'd rather hear before paying for the setup.
Technologies & integrations

What we build on and what it connects to

Stack

  • Google Ads — manages impressions and bids; does not populate the lists itself, the data comes from the tag or GA4
  • Remarketing tag — gathers an audience; without product parameters gives only "was on the site"
  • GA4 audiences — segments by events; the list will not be filled retroactively, only from the day of creation
  • Google Tag Manager — manages events without code modifications; he does not measure anything himself
  • Dynamic remarketing — replaces revised items; needs id match with feed
  • Merchant Center is a source of goods for dynamics; policies are strict, the account can be blocked
  • Frequency limitation — keeps the pressure limit; in automatic types of campaigns, control is narrower

Integrations

  • GA4
  • Google Tag Manager
  • Google Merchant Center
  • CRM for customer lists
  • data collection consent banner
Segments by engagement depth vs. a single "all visitors" list

How this option differs from the alternative

Who is being overtaken by advertising?one who reached a particular step and stopped
What does a person see?the revised position, substituted from the feed
Retention periodits own for each segment, from days to months
Frequency of impressionslimit per day and week, different creatives according to the length of the visit
What can be seen in the reportreturn separately for each segment
What we need from you

We can't start without this — best to prepare in advance

  1. Access to Google Ads, GA4 and Tag Manager is at the edit level, not the view level.
  2. A working product feed if dynamic remarketing is required.
  3. The average decision-making cycle in your niche: the retention period of segments depends on it.
  4. A list of goods or services that should not be re-advertised.
  5. Ready-made banners or consent to their production in a separate volume.
  6. Monthly budget for the return channel — to calculate the frequency limit, not to guess it.

If something is missing — let us know, we'll help you gather it or do it as a separate task.

FAQ

Most frequently asked questions — with concrete answers

How is dynamic remarketing different from regular?

Normal shows one banner to everyone who has been to the site. Dynamic substitutes in the ad exactly those items that the person looked at and takes them from the product feed. The condition is one, but strict: the ID of the product that the site passes to the event must match the ID in the Merchant Center feed. In the underwear store we measured, the module sends the product_id to Google and Facebook at the same time - there the dynamics are possible immediately. Where the site gives the id of the variant, and the feed is collected by models, the ads are shown as empty, and this is fixed on the site, not in the office.

Why are we haunted by an advertisement for a product we have already bought?

Because exceptions are not configured. This is the most common defect: the "viewed" segment works, the "bought" segment exists separately and does not subtract from anything. As a result, the budget goes to a person who has already brought money, and annoys him. We build lists by the difference of steps: the one who reached step N and did not reach N+1 gets the impression. The exception is products with a repeated cycle: there the buyer is returned, but later with a different message.

How much traffic does it take for remarketing to work?

Each network has minimum listing size thresholds, and for display impressions they are significantly lower than for search listings. The exact figure is calculated from your attendance during the free check. If there is little traffic, the campaign will simply not start showing - you will not see any error in the account, there will be silence. It's better to know this before you pay for the setup, not two weeks later.

How long to keep a person in a segment?

As long as the decision cycle in your niche. For consumables it is days, for furniture or production equipment - months. A single window for the entire account is wrong in both directions: in the first case, you show ads for months to someone who bought elsewhere a long time ago, in the second case, you lose the person right before the decision. Therefore, we set different deadlines for each segment, and not one per office.

Is the opt-in banner breaking remarketing?

It does not break, but it reduces the audience: those who refused do not get into the lists. This is handled through consent and simulation mode, and is a separate setup step. The main thing to say in advance: after the implementation of the banner, the size of the lists decreases, and this decrease should not be confused with the breakdown of the tag. We do not attempt to bypass the user's refusal and we do not offer schemes that allegedly know how to do this.

Is it possible to show remarketing in search instead of just banners?

You can: These are lists for search campaigns. They do not show individual ads, but change bids and texts for those who have already visited the site. The requirements for the size of the list there are higher than in the media network, so this format is not available to a small site, even if desired. For a store with significant traffic, this is one of the cheapest ways to increase returns without opening a new channel.

How not to get bored with frequency restrictions?

The limit of impressions per user per day and per week plus various creatives for different ages of the visit. A person who was there yesterday and a person who was there three weeks ago should see different messages. We set the limit at the start and adjust it according to the data, and do not leave it at the default. Fair Tool Limit: Automatic campaign types have a tighter frequency control than manual campaign types, and this affects type selection.

We don't have counters on our site at all - where to start?

From measurement, and this is a different job with a different deadline. We did not find any mention of googletagmanager, gtag, google-analytics or fbq in the store of dental materials - the site is technically neat, 123 addresses in the site map without duplicates. Remarketing there will not start until events appear. In this case, we provide two separate estimates: events first, then audiences and campaigns — so you can see what you're paying for every step of the way.

Submit access to Google Ads and GA4 - let's see what your audiences are coming from.

In response: a list of segments available today, an estimate of their size and a scheme of exclusions. If there are no events on the site, we will say so in the first email.
