How to write an OLX listing description that sells faster

How to sell on OLX faster: a title with the words people search for, a structured description, a before-and-after example and what to do after publishing. Plus a separate part for stores with hundreds of listings.

Two identical baby strollers, the same price, the same city. One sells in a few days, the other hangs there for a month, while the seller keeps answering the same questions in the chat: “still available?”, “how big is it folded?”, “can you ship with Nova Poshta?”. The difference is usually not the item but what the listing says and what it leaves out.

Below is how to write an OLX listing description so the buyer gets the answers before messaging you, and what else, besides the text, affects how quickly an item finds a new owner. At the end there is a separate part for those who have not two or three listings but hundreds.

How to sell on OLX: what the buyer sees before messaging you

A buyer on a classifieds site moves from the general to the details. First they see the photo, title and price in the search feed, then they open the listing and scroll through the photos, and only then read the text. Hence a simple sequence: the title and photos decide whether the listing gets opened at all, and the description decides whether the person messages you or moves on to the next one.

A description on OLX is not ad copy. The buyer is not looking for emotions; they are checking the listing against their needs: whether the size fits, whether there are hidden defects, whether they can get the item the way that suits them. Every question the text leaves unanswered becomes either a chat message or a closed tab.

The title: the words people search with

Search on OLX works by words, so the title should contain the ones the buyer types: what it is, the brand and model, the key feature. A title like “2-in-1 stroller [brand, model], winter bassinet, up to 3 years” will be found by people searching for a 2-in-1 stroller, a stroller of that brand and a winter bassinet. “Selling urgently!!!” will be found by no one, because none of those words are in the query.

A few practical rules:

  • start with the name of the item, not with the word “selling” — that is obvious anyway from the fact that you are on a classifieds site;
  • write the brand and model the way the manufacturer does, and if the name is often typed in Cyrillic, add that spelling to the description;
  • do not write in capital letters or add rows of exclamation marks — it reads like shouting and adds nothing to search;
  • one item per title; a bundle of three different items is better split into separate listings or openly called a “bundle”.

How to write an OLX listing description: the structure

A good OLX listing text has a predictable order. A buyer who has looked through a dozen similar listings looks for the same answers in the same places, and if you lay them out the same way, they are more likely to read to the end. Below is an order that works for most used and new items.

What it is and who it is for

The first sentence is the name, the model, the year or season, what the item is for. The first lines are read most carefully, so put the essentials there and not at the end after the story of how you bought it. “2-in-1 stroller [brand, model], 2023: bassinet and stroller seat, suitable from birth to 3 years.”

Condition — specific, not “perfect”

Almost everyone writes “perfect condition” and “like new,” so buyers do not believe those words. Instead of an assessment, give facts: how long the item was in use, where there are signs of wear, what was repaired, what works. “Used for a year, mostly in summer. A scuff on the handle, visible in photo 6. Wheels and folding mechanism have no play.”

A defect you have named and shown in a photo works in your favor: the buyer sees that nothing is being hidden and is less likely to haggle over it when you meet. A defect they find themselves becomes a reason to haggle, and often a reason to walk away.

What is included

List what comes with it as separate items: the main item, covers, rain cover, charger, manual, box. If something is missing, say that too: “no original box.” “What’s included?” is another of those questions that keeps coming up in the chat, and a list takes care of it.

Dimensions and specifications

For clothing, the size on the label plus measurements in centimeters, because size charts differ between brands. For furniture and appliances, dimensions, weight and how the item comes apart. For strollers and bicycles, the folded size: that is exactly what the buyer checks against their car trunk.

Why you are selling

One sentence, no drama: “the child outgrew it,” “moving,” “we bought a bigger model.” This removes the suspicion that something is wrong with the item, and people find it easier to message a seller who has explained where the listing came from.

Delivery, payment, meeting

Write how the item can be picked up or received: pickup from which neighborhood, shipping by carrier, OLX delivery, whether you are willing to meet near a metro station. Separately, whether inspection before payment is possible and whether the price is negotiable. “Price negotiable only for pickup” is an answer too, and it is better to give it in the text than to explain it to everyone.

What is not included

If the photo shows something that is not for sale — a stand, a second item, an accessory from the box next to it — say so directly. An argument about “but it was in the photo” when you meet is a waste of time for both sides.

An OLX description answers the questions from the chat

Buyers in OLX chats mostly ask the same things: is it in stock, what is the price and can it be cheaper, what size is it, how will you ship it. Some of the conversations are haggling and arranging a meeting. We see this in the conversations we analyze before setting up an auto-reply bot for OLX chat: the set of questions repeats so much that it can be written down as a list.

That gives you a working technique. When the same question arrives in the chat a second time, add the answer to the listing text. Over time the description will cover most of what you used to explain by hand, and the people who message you will be the ones already ready to make a deal.

What not to put in a listing text

  • “Message me on Viber at this number” as the main way to get in touch. OLX may hide phone numbers and links in messages, so moving the conversation somewhere off the platform is unreliable, and a listing built on that risks getting no replies. The OLX chat and the call button work more predictably.
  • Empty praise. “Super quality,” “best price,” “hurry” — buyers skip them, and they take up space in the first lines.
  • An online store product description copied as is. That text was written for a catalog with filters and a specifications table, and on a classifieds site it usually works poorly: there you need shorter titles and a different presentation. We wrote about this in more detail on the page about listing a store on OLX.
  • Other people’s texts. A description copied from another listing describes someone else’s item — with someone else’s contents, someone else’s defects and someone else’s delivery method.
  • Promises you will not keep. “Will ship today” in a listing that has been up for a week reads as untrue by the second day.

OLX listing example: before and after

The example below is made up and the item is hypothetical; in a real listing the brackets would be replaced with the brand and model from the label. It does not show the “right words” but the difference in how many questions the text answers on its own.

Before.

Selling a stroller in perfect condition, barely used, everything works. Very comfortable, lightweight. Negotiable. Message me!

After.

2-in-1 stroller [brand, model], 2023: bassinet and stroller seat. Suitable from birth to 3 years.

Condition: used for one year, mostly in summer. A scuff on the right handle (photo 6), fabric has no stains, wheels and folding mechanism have no play.

Included: bassinet, stroller seat, rain cover, mosquito net, diaper bag. No original box.

Folded size: 85 × 60 × 35 cm, frame with wheels weighs 11 kg — fits in a sedan trunk.

Selling because the child has moved on to a lightweight stroller.

Pickup: Kyiv, Obolon, you can inspect it and take it for a test push. I will ship with Nova Poshta after prepayment or via OLX delivery. Small discount possible for pickup.

In the first version the buyer learns nothing that cannot be seen in the photos, and every question they have turns into a message. In the second, most chat conversations get shorter: the person either writes “I’ll take it, when can I see it?” or moves on to another listing without taking up your time.

Photos and price: without them a description will not help

The text only works once the listing has been opened. A few things worth doing before you sit down to write the description:

  • shoot in daylight against a neutral background, with no unrelated things in the frame;
  • the first photo shows the whole item, then the details, the label or model plate, and a separate shot of each defect mentioned in the text;
  • before setting a price, look through a few similar listings in your city — not to be the cheapest, but to understand what you will be compared with.

If your price is noticeably higher than the neighboring listings, the description should explain why: a newer model, the full set, a receipt, a warranty. Without an explanation, a higher price simply filters buyers out.

How to sell on OLX fast: what to do after publishing

Publishing a listing is half the job. After that, how fast you sell depends on how you handle the conversations.

Reply quickly. A buyer who has looked through several similar listings often messages several sellers at once and makes a deal with whoever answered first and to the point. Check how long a buyer waits for a reply not only during the day but also in the evening and on weekends.

Keep the listing up to date. Sold it — deactivate it; the price or contents changed — fix the text. A listing where the buyer finds out in the chat that it is “already gone” wastes both sides’ time and does not add trust to the rest of your listings.

Expand the description based on chat questions. As mentioned above: a repeated question is a signal that something is missing from the text.

If there are so many conversations that you physically cannot keep up with replies, a bot can prepare some of the answers. There is a limit here: through the official OLX API the bot replies only in conversations started by the buyer, and when the chat is mostly haggling and arranging meetings, automation covers little. How it works and where a bot will not help is on the page about the OLX auto-reply bot.

When there are hundreds of listings: descriptions for a store on OLX

Everything above is easy to do by hand for two or three listings. If you have five or ten, that is still an hour or two of work, and automation will not pay off here — write them yourself using the structure above.

A store that exports its catalog to OLX is a different situation. Here descriptions usually land on the board straight from the product page on the website, and you get the same problem described above: the text was written for a different place. Rewriting hundreds of listings one by one in the OLX account takes a long time, and the same rules apply to each of them: what it is, condition, contents, dimensions, delivery.

For this case we built the service OLX listing descriptions via Textory. Here is how it works: the listings already in your account are read through the OLX API, the texts are rewritten through the API of Textory — our product for product descriptions — and returned to the listings. You can connect it in two ways: through LEO Chat, if you already use it, or directly.

A few honest limits worth knowing before you start:

  • Textory writes from the specifications and does not invent properties. If a listing has no size, material or contents, the new text will not have them either: the rewritten description will be better structured, but it will not know what you do not know.
  • Updating a listing through the API sends the whole listing, not just the description field. That is why the first pass should be a single listing, checking that the price, photos and other fields stayed in place, and only then the whole account.
  • Text does not replace price, photos and response speed. A better description removes unnecessary questions and suspicions, but it will not make a sale out of a listing that loses on price or looks.

If you are choosing between different ways to fill in descriptions — a copywriter, an AI chat or a pipeline — we compared them in a separate article.

Summary: OLX description checklist

Before publishing, reread the listing through the buyer’s eyes and go through the list:

  1. The title starts with the name of the item and includes the brand, model and main feature.
  2. The first sentence says what it is and who it is for.
  3. The condition is described with facts, and every defect is in a photo.
  4. The contents are listed, and anything missing is named.
  5. Dimensions are given in centimeters, and for large items, the folded size.
  6. One sentence says why you are selling.
  7. It says how to get the item, whether it can be inspected and whether the price is negotiable.
  8. Answers to questions that have already come up in the chat have been added to the text.
  9. The text has no contact details instead of the chat, no empty praise and no descriptions copied from others.

For a few listings, that is enough. If you have hundreds and they came to OLX from a store catalog, see how rewriting OLX listing descriptions via Textory works — or describe your task to the agency: the review is free, we reply within two hours and work under a contract.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions on the topic

How long should an OLX listing description be?

Long enough to answer the buyer’s questions: what it is, condition, contents, dimensions, how to get it and whether the price is negotiable. For a small item that is a few lines; for a stroller or furniture, a few short paragraphs. Length for its own sake does not help.

Should I put a phone number or a messenger link in the description?

It is better not to rely on that for contact: OLX may hide phone numbers and links in messages. Replying in the platform’s chat or via the call button is more reliable.

Should I mention defects if they might put buyers off?

Yes, together with photos. A defect named in advance is factored in by the buyer before the meeting, while one discovered on the spot becomes a reason to haggle or walk away and undermines trust in the rest of the description.

Can I take the description from a product page in an online store?

As a source of specifications, yes, but not word for word. Catalog text is designed for filters and tables, while a classifieds site needs shorter titles and a presentation that answers the buyer’s questions right away.

Does Textory rewrite listings directly in the OLX account?

In the OLX listing descriptions service, yes: listings are read through the OLX API, the text is rewritten through the Textory API and returned to the listing. Since an update through the API sends the whole listing, we start with one listing and check that the price, photos and other fields have not changed.

I need to update five listings. Is automation worth it?

No. For a few listings it is faster and cheaper to rewrite the texts yourself using the structure from the article; automation makes sense when there are hundreds of listings and they come from a store catalog.
